Ecdysterone

Beta-Ecdysterone (20-Hydroxyecdysone)

Supplement

Beta-Ecdysterone (20-Hydroxyecdysone) is a naturally occurring phytoecdysteroid found in plants such as spinach, quinoa, and Leuzea carthamoides, primarily used as a performance-enhancing supplement to support muscle protein synthesis, lean mass accrual, and exercise recovery. It has gained significant interest in the sports and fitness community following studies suggesting anabolic-like effects without androgenic activity. It is classified as a dietary supplement in most countries but has been flagged by WADA for potential inclusion on prohibited lists.

Mechanism of Action

Ecdysterone is believed to stimulate muscle protein synthesis primarily through interaction with estrogen receptor beta (ERβ), activating downstream PI3K/Akt/mTOR signaling pathways that promote anabolic processes in skeletal muscle tissue. Unlike anabolic steroids, it does not bind to androgen receptors, which accounts for its lack of androgenic side effects. Some research also suggests it may enhance nitrogen retention and improve mitochondrial efficiency, contributing to improved endurance and recovery.

Dosing Protocols

oral500-1000mg- Twice daily

With meals to enhance absorption and minimize gastrointestinal discomfort

Cycle: 8-12 weeks on, 4 weeks off

The 2019 Freie Universität Berlin study used 200mg/day with notable effects, but most sports nutrition protocols use 500-2000mg/day. Higher-end dosing (1500-2000mg/day) is used by advanced users but lacks strong human clinical data. Cyclodextrin-complexed formulations may significantly improve bioavailability.

Safety & Side Effects

Ecdysterone has a favorable short-term safety profile in human trials with no serious adverse events reported at doses up to 800mg/day over 10 weeks; however, long-term safety data in humans remains limited. It is not a controlled substance in most jurisdictions, but WADA added it to its 2020 monitoring program, and competitive athletes should verify current regulatory status before use.

Possible Side Effects

  • !Gastrointestinal discomfort including nausea and bloating at doses above 1000mg
  • !Mild insomnia or sleep disturbances reported by some users
  • !Headache, particularly during initial use
  • !Hormonal fluctuation concerns in women due to weak ERβ activity (largely theoretical at standard doses)
  • !Potential hypoglycemic effect in susceptible individuals
  • !Rare reports of skin rash or mild allergic reaction to plant-sourced extracts

Interactions

  • -May have additive hypoglycemic effects when combined with insulin or blood glucose-lowering medications — monitor blood sugar closely
  • -Potential interaction with estrogen-modulating drugs (SERMs, aromatase inhibitors) due to ERβ activity — use with caution
  • -May enhance the anabolic signaling effects of creatine or leucine-rich protein supplements through overlapping mTOR pathway activation
  • -Theoretical interaction with immunosuppressants due to possible immune-modulating properties — consult a physician if on these medications
  • -Combined use with other phytoestrogens (soy isoflavones, genistein) may produce additive ERβ stimulation with unknown cumulative effects

Cost & Where to Buy

$30-$90
per month

Cost varies significantly based on dosage, extract standardization percentage (look for 95%+ ecdysterone by HPLC), and formulation type. Cyclodextrin-complexed versions command a premium. Budget brands at lower standardization are cheaper but may deliver inconsistent active compound amounts.
