D-Aspartic Acid

D-Aspartic Acid (DAA)

Amino Acid

D-Aspartic Acid (DAA) is an endogenous amino acid found in the neuroendocrine tissues that acts as a regulator of testosterone synthesis and release. It is primarily used by athletes and men with suboptimal testosterone levels to transiently boost luteinizing hormone (LH) and testosterone production. Research shows modest short-term increases in testosterone in untrained or hypogonadal men, with limited efficacy in those with already-optimized hormonal profiles.

Mechanism of Action

DAA accumulates in the hypothalamus and pituitary gland, where it stimulates the release of gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) and luteinizing hormone (LH), subsequently driving Leydig cell testosterone synthesis in the testes. It also acts directly in testicular tissue to upregulate steroidogenic acute regulatory protein (StAR), a rate-limiting step in androgen production. Additionally, DAA modulates NMDA receptor activity in the central nervous system, contributing to its neuroendocrine signaling effects.

Dosing Protocols

oral2000-3000mg- Once daily

Morning, with or without food

Cycle: 12 days on, 7-14 days off, or 3 weeks on, 1 week off

Most clinical studies used 3000mg/day for 12 days with a rest period. Chronic continuous use appears to blunt response due to upregulation of D-aspartate oxidase. Cycling is strongly recommended to maintain efficacy.

Safety & Side Effects

D-Aspartic Acid has a generally favorable short-term safety profile and is not a controlled substance in any major jurisdiction. However, men with hormone-sensitive conditions such as prostate cancer or existing high estrogen levels should avoid use, and long-term safety data beyond 90 days remains limited.

Possible Side Effects

  • !Headaches, particularly during initial use or at higher doses
  • !Irritability and mood changes due to CNS glutamatergic activity
  • !Acne flare-ups associated with transient androgen elevation
  • !Gastrointestinal discomfort including bloating and nausea at doses above 3000mg
  • !Increased estradiol levels secondary to aromatization of elevated testosterone
  • !Testicular discomfort reported anecdotally at high doses
  • !Sleep disturbances due to NMDA receptor modulation

Interactions

  • -May additively elevate testosterone and estrogen when combined with other testosterone-boosting supplements (e.g., fenugreek, ashwagandha) - monitor for estrogenic side effects
  • -May antagonize effects of aromatase inhibitors if rising estradiol is the target concern
  • -Potential additive CNS excitatory activity when combined with NMDA agonists or high-dose caffeine
  • -Use caution with exogenous testosterone therapy - concurrent use is generally unnecessary and may disrupt endogenous HPG axis signaling
  • -May interact with medications affecting the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis including clomiphene or GnRH analogs

Cost & Where to Buy

$10-$30
per month

DAA is widely available as a bulk powder or capsules from numerous supplement brands. Bulk powder is significantly cheaper per gram; premium branded products cost more. Monthly cost reflects a cycling protocol averaging approximately 20-25 active dosing days per month.
