Apoaequorin is a calcium-binding protein originally derived from the Aequorea victoria jellyfish, now produced recombinantly and marketed primarily as a cognitive supplement. It is best known as the active ingredient in Prevagen, and is promoted for supporting memory, focus, and age-related cognitive decline in older adults.
Mechanism of Action
Apoaequorin binds free intracellular calcium ions, theoretically helping to buffer dysregulated calcium signaling that is associated with neuronal aging and cell death. Proponents suggest it may support neuronal survival by mimicking the role of endogenous calcium-binding proteins that decline with age. However, significant scientific debate exists around whether orally administered apoaequorin survives gastrointestinal digestion intact and actually reaches the brain in meaningful concentrations.

Dosing Protocols
In the morning on an empty stomach
This is the standard dose used in the Prevagen product and in the Madison Memory Study clinical trial. Higher doses (40mg) were used in some subgroup analyses but showed marginal additional benefit. Long-term daily use is typical, as effects are reported to develop over weeks to months.
Safety & Side Effects
Apoaequorin appears to have a benign short-term safety profile based on available data, and no serious adverse events have been conclusively linked to it in clinical studies. However, the FTC has challenged marketing claims as inadequately supported, and the clinical evidence for cognitive benefit remains weak and contested; consumers should have realistic expectations.
